"The Uglies"

In my novel " The Uglies" the idea of a dystopic society is present. Their society is divided into the categories of pretty and ugly which disconnects people from the reality that they are still all people.

The main character, a young girl named Tally has yet to get the surgery to become pretty. Unlike everyone else she has a different way of thinking.

"Her name was Shay. She had long dark hair in pigtails, and her eyes were too wide apart. Her lips were fuull enough, but she was even skinnier than a new pretty. She'd come over to New Pretty Town on her own expedition, and had been hiding here by the river for an hour. "I've never seen anything like this," she wispered. "There's wardens and hovercars everywhere!"

This part of the novel really made me think about a dystopic society. The fact that everyone is always under constant surrveilance, always being watched. Also the fact that "pretties" are seen around town and they are just ignored and walked by unlike the "uglies" who are targeted and displayed as less. When there are still equal, they just look different.

Our society today could 100% turn into something like this and in many cases it already has. Places like London, and a little bit in Vancouver have cameras and surrveilance all around there cities. Some could say this is an invasion of privacy and others see it as a good way to reduce crime.

Twelve Angry Men

A grave injustice.....

The factors that influence the fact that the young man could have died were the men that were on the jury. After doing the project on "12 Angry Men" it made it even more clear who and what were the factors. The men that were on the jury dispayed extremlly diferent characteristics; some good and some bad. Jurors such as 3, 4, and 8 in my mind protrayed a strong opinion towards the case and were the desiding factors on the jury. The rest of the jurors seemed to be a hindrence or more neutral towards the case with vauge responses and false evidence.
The factors on a jury would be much the same in our society today because having randomlly chosen people brings froward a large group a characteristics creating conflict and grave injustice.

"The Crysanthemums"

In the stort and minimalistic story "The Crysanthemums" by John Steinbeck the issue of husband and wife conflict comes up yet again. The wife being a quite and meek woman, and the husband being more stern and abrupt. They seemed to get along throughout the story but near the end it began to change. The husband and wife had trouble with communication and this rose minor conflicts between them. The conflicts to me didnt seem to be very severe because the wife was very quite and the husband just alomost in a way bossed her around. He "wore the pants in the relationship" it seemed. He was controlling and she wanted to break free. When the Tinker came along she had a different look in her eyes. She felt stronger and felt a need to be more womanly. He brought out a different side to her. She was a strong woman to begin with but the Tinker changed her. I just wished that she maybe had stayed more loyal to her husband. There was nothing wrong with him. He was a traditional husband from the 1930's and had a wife who was confusing his thoughts.

"So much water so close to home"

In the short story "So much water so close to home" by Raymond Carver, this author clearly develops characters to outline a story of difference. The husband and the wife seem to disagree and have conflicting personalities. Starting out with the wife, her insane and bipolar personalty made is hard to grasp what she wanted from her husband and why she was acting odd throughout the story. The husband on the other hand seemed very reserved and short tempered, especially with the wife. Also, the husband and the wife had very different priorities. The wife was an excellent mother, but had trouble dealing with her husbands outburst. The husband seemed to care less if he was at home, and wanted his wife under certain circumstances. In the end they let us hanging and wondering why they chose to end their disagreement in such a manner.
